Haiti - FLASH : The stray bullets make more and more innocent victims
Since July 23, 2022, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has observed in its medical facilities in the capital a significant increase in the number of people injured by "a stray bullet", for example, following violent fighting between armed gangs in the outskirts of the city center, the MSF Emergency Center in Turgeau received nearly 80 gunshot wounds, the vast majority victims of stray bullets.

[note HL] Note that a bullet fired by an AK-47 type assault rifle is lethal up to more than 1,000 m and injured victims are mostly outside direct combat zones.

MSF points out that the patients who come to its centers represent only a small part of the victims because moving around has become extremely dangerous in several parts of the city and many inhabitants are trapped in their own neighborhoods.

"MSF has set up mobile clinics in some of these areas to bring medical care closer to affected populations. But even for our medical teams, access to these places remains very complicated. On at least three occasions, the activities of MSF's mobile clinics had to be postponed or canceled due to the violence of the clashes, depriving our beneficiaries of essential medical care," laments Rachelle Seguin, medical coordinator for MSF in Haiti.

In some of these areas, MSF can only treat patients in basements or windowless rooms, due to the danger of crossfire and stray bullets...
