Haiti - Humanitarian : 1.3 million Haitians will enter a food emergency (IPC 4)
While political instability is persistent, rising inflation and recurrent disasters, levels of hunger are constantly rising in Haiti, warns the UN World Food Program (WFP).

The population of Haiti suffers from very high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. According to the latest estimates of the Integrated Humanitarian and Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), some 4.5 million Haitians (45% of the population) are expected to suffer from hunger. Among them, more than 1.3 million are likely to be in an emergency situation (IPC scale Phase 4* out of 5** IPC scale (Integrated food security Phase Classification) between March and June 2022, indicates Pierre Honnorat, WFP Representative in Haiti.

This number is expected to rise to 4.6 million by June 2022 due to reduced access to basic foodstuffs as incomes remain low and prices rise. According to the National Food Security Coordination (CNSA), the monthly cost of the minimum basic food basket (rice, wheat flour, corn, beans, sugar and vegetable oil) has increased from $20 to $30. In two years, the price of bread has multiplied by five.

For some Haitian families, the current economic crisis is characterized by a weakening of the Gourde against the US dollar, high inflation https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36179-haiti-economy-annual-inflation-24.html and a rise in fuel prices in previous months https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35425-haiti-flash-fuel-prices-will-explode-at-the-pump-official.html which reduces the purchasing power of many vulnerable households, making basic products such as food unaffordable.

For escalation, the Ukrainian crisis may soon worsen Haitian food security. With world food prices at an all-time high, the WFP believes the Ukrainian war is likely to continue to negatively impact purchasing power in a country heavily dependent on imports. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36211-haiti-flash-message-to-the-nation-from-prime-minister-henry-video.html

Faced with this humanitarian emergency, WFP hopes to assist 1.7 million people this year. In 2021, WFP provided assistance, including take-home food rations, to 1.3 million Haitians.

Alongside its emergency responses, WFP is strengthening the resilience of Haitians, national social protection and food systems, through income-generating activities. These community activities include road rehabilitation, soil and water conservation, irrigation canals. They are accompanied by complementary activities aimed at strengthening local food production, agricultural practices, nutrition and reducing gender inequalities.

These interventions aim to strengthen the economic resilience of vulnerable households by creating assets and to fight against food insecurity by diversifying sources of income.

Note IPC Scale :

* Phase 4: Humanitarian Emergency
Severe lack of access to food with excessive mortality, very high and increasing malnutrition and irreversible depletion of livelihood assets;

** Phase 5: Famine / Humanitarian Crisis
Severe social disruption with complete lack of access to food and/or other basic needs in which widespread starvation, death and displacement are indisputable.
