The second phase of the rehabilitation and consolidation works of the three drainage canals in Cap Haitien, in particular in the localities of Ti Rivière, Goya et Terre Maïs will begin on August 22 and will last three months.

These three projects, costing a total of $USD600,000, are funded by the Section of Community Violence Reduction (CVR) of the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah) and implemented by the Organization for International Migration (IOM). This work aims to contribute to the protection of populations against the risk of flooding, at the same time they are aimed at reducing violence in vulnerable communities, particularly through the creation of temporary jobs. 1.500 meters of channels will be treated as part of this second phase that will create a total of 2.553 jobs.

Fritz Joseph, Deputy Mayor of Cap-Haitien has expressed his satisfaction "Thanks to this important work in the Northern Department, we will be safer here. Because walls will be built to channel water from the sea and river."

For his part, Jackson of the Boards of Directors of the Section Communale (CASEC) of Petite Anse, while welcoming this work, has wished to clarify that "Everything that was done her ewas done either by the USAID, Minustah or the IOM [...] but the Haitian government has done nothing for us" arguing, with Mariano Fernández, the head of the Minustah, for a better answer to the basic needs of the population.
