Haiti - WEATHER ALERT : Orange alert, risk of tropical depression
While this June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season, the axis of a surface trough at the level of passage of wind, influence since Tuesday the climate in Haiti. In addition, a low pressure area located on the western portion of the Caribbean Sea is scheduled to go up to our island and become a tropical depression in the next 24 to 48 hours. This system could dump large amounts of rain especially on the southern peninsula of Haiti from Wednesday evening. These rain showers could last several days, considering the very slow movement of this system.

Consequently, the Permanent Secretariat for Risk Management and Disaster (SPGRD) declares the level of orange alert (ie impact risk of moderate to severe) to heavy rains and announces the launch of National Plan for Risk Management and Disaster (PNGRD) face to the threats of heavy rain with risk of river flood, rockfalls, landslide, collapse and flooding for all our departments including, Nippes, Great Cove, South, Southeast, West, Central and Artibonite.

The National Meteorological Center (CNM) in conjunction with the DPC and the SPGRD ask the population of the areas at risk of rockfalls, landslides and flooding, to stay vigilant and strictly implement the following safety guidelines:

  • Listen the weather updates.
  • If your home is threatened by floods, rockfalls and landslide, prepare to evacuate.
  • Do not cross the rivers in flood on any pretext.
  • In cases of severe thunderstorms, do not shelter near windows and in woodland.
