Haiti - Reconstruction : Jean-Max Bellerive criticizes and defends his government

Jean-Max Bellerive, Haiti's Prime Minister, criticized on Monday on the BBC, the international community, which does not allow his country to play a greater role in its own reconstruction. He said that his government had too little influence, because the money of aid was delivered mainly by external agencies. Stating that it is necessary to have more control over non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Let's be clear, I have nothing against NGOs, we need them. What I need is to have control over what they do in my country, where they do it and with whom they are doing it, and at what cost".

He recalled that only 20% of aid promised by donors for the first year [less than $ 1 billion] have been received to date, that changes in the lives of Haitians were not visible and than 1.5 million Haitians were still living in camps.

He lamented that we hold responsible, the executive, for the slowness of reconstruction, given the situation, and that its government is accused of corruption on money it never received.

He stressed that following the unrest that followed the publication of preliminary results of the first round of presidential elections on November 28, It there in the eyes of the international community, a lack of credibility of the Haitian government "whatever the next president, the next legislature, will have a credibility problem to solve." said the Prime Minister.
