Haiti - Elections : Youri Latortue, denounced the government's maneuvers

Although the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) and the government have never talked [publicly] of the possibility of postponing the elections, rumors continue to circulate with emphasis on this possibility. Officials of the opposition (formerly hostile to the elections) now become defenders of the elections (!), they warned the government against any attempts to postpone the next election.

Other political sectors estimate as for them, that the deplorable living conditions in the camps, where live nearly 1.5 million refugees, the proportion taken by the cholera epidemic since it touched Port-au-Prince, and the serious floods caused by the Tomas hurricane, would be reasons sufficient for a postponing of the next elections.

Youri Latortue, head of the party Aksyon Ann Ayiti (Haiti in Action AAA), yesterday denounced what he called "delaying tactics of the government to break the momentum of popular mobilization around the next elections." For this responsible, elections must be held as scheduled, even if it continues to show his defiance against the CEP. For Youri Latortue, Only a massive turnout, can foil the plans of the CEP.

The distrust is such that other politicians do not hesitate to assert that these rumors are circulated by people close to the government to demobilize the electorate, because the government feared a high turnout. Thereby reducing, according to them, the possibilities for manipulation of results.

However, assuming a high turnout is not shared by the sociologist Daniel Torment, which provides a low turnout of voters at the next election. He believes that citizens, in the present context, are not motivated enough to vote. He stressed that the population has been hard hit by the earthquake last January, and now Hurricane Tomas and now the cholera epidemic that spreads throughout the country and which does not cease each day making new victims.
