The Association of Industrial of Herrera and the province of Santo Domingo (AEIH), joined several other business entities during the past week and called on the Dominican government to take action against the frequently encountered obstacles imposed by Haiti to imports from the Dominican Republic.

In a statement released Sunday, Victor Castro, President of the AEIH, urged the Trade Defence Commission (CDC), of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, to monitor the tariff measures harmful to Dominican producers. He believes that with the lack of willingness of Haiti it is necessary for the Dominican Government, to use the global institutions that govern trade, including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Agreement on Trade with the European Union (EPA), instances in which the Dominican Republic and Haiti are full members.

The President of the AEIH, who hopes that the CDC will defend domestic production, said that so far "the allegations of Haiti proved unfounded [...] We are witnessing a worrying trend: barriers tariff on meat, poultry, eggs [...] What surprises reserve us Haiti for tomorrow ?" wonders Victor Castro, who also asked the Dominican authorities to be very attentive to any investigation initiated by Haiti, on alleged unfair practices (dumping) in Haiti, following the declaration of the Economic Forum of the Haitian private sector, last week that in its statement of support to the government of Haiti on the import of poultry products from Dominicxan Republic denounced unfair trade practices...

For his part, Roberto Martinez Director of the Joint Bilateral Commission (CMB) between the two countries, said that the Dominican Republic made ​​every effort to comply with agreements concluded with Haiti in March 2012, "we demand that Haiti recognize this space of institutional dialogue," recalling the signing of several agreements to formalize and make transparent the trade relations between the two nations as well as the effort of his country to strengthen the CMB, by providing it a technical team to meet its commitments "On trade, the Dominican Republic is ready to comply with the agreements of reciprocal protection of investments, customs facilitation and implementation of preferences within the framework of the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union," added Roberto Martinez recalling that "commitments are joint nature and must be addressed on both sides simultaneously."
