FAO ready to support the development of food supply chains in Haiti

On Monday, April 27, 2026, James Monazard, Minister of Commerce and Industry (MCI), received Pierre Vauthier, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO Haiti), at his offices.

During their discussions, Pierre Vauthier expressed the commitment of his institution to supporting the development of food sectors in Haiti, with a particular focus on the mango sector, recognized for its significant export potential.

Minister Monazard welcomed this initiative, recalling that this sector was once a significant driver of the national economy. He also highlighted other strategic sectors, notably fishing and cocoa, which offer strong potential for value creation and job creation.

The discussions led to the proposal to establish a joint commission bringing together the MCI, the FAO, and the Ministry of Agriculture to coordinate the actions necessary for the structured development of these sectors.

Both parties also emphasized the need to strengthen the involvement of the private sector, particularly entrepreneurs operating in these sectors, to foster a concerted and sustainable approach.

Several priority areas for intervention were identified, including :

• Strengthening quality control, labeling, and packaging mechanisms for the mango sector;

• Training fishermen and providing appropriate equipment for the fishing sector;

• Processing cocoa into derivative products, such as chocolate, to increase its added value.

In this regard, work will begin in the coming weeks to formalize a framework for collaboration.

The meeting concluded in a cordial atmosphere, marked by the satisfaction of both parties and their commitment to continue discussions to implement these initiatives for the benefit of Haiti's economic development.
