Haiti - FLASH : Dismissal of the PM raises tensions between the international community and the CPT 23/01/2026 08:12:48
The Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) appears determined to stand up to the Trump administration, despite pressure from the U.S. Embassy, the Office of the U.S. Western Hemisphere Minister, the State Department, and several other countries, including Canada. A majority of CPT members have decided to dismiss Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. It should be noted that on Wednesday, January 21, Presidential Advisor Smith Augustin (one of the five signatories) withdrew his signature from the resolution calling for the Prime Minister's dismissal (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46685-haiti-flash-attempt-to-revoke-the-pm-defeated-by-the-usa.html). After this initial reversal, Smith Augustin reversed his decision again and confirmed on Thursday, January 22, via WhatsApp that he was ultimately maintaining his signature : "Four other colleagues and I signed in favor of the Prime Minister's dismissal." However, the transmission and implementation of this resolution dismissing the Prime Minister is being blocked by Laurent Saint-Cyr, President pro tempore and Coordinator of the Presidential Transitional Council, who has so far fiercely opposed "[...] any resolution aimed at undermining governmental stability as February 7th approaches [...]" as he wrote in his letter to the members of the CPT. Download the full correspondence from Saint-Cyr (PDF in French): https://www.haitilibre.com/docs/correspondance-Laurent-SAINT-CYR-CPT.pdf Official International Reactions : U.S. Embassy : "The U.S. objective for Haiti remains the establishment of baseline security and stability. The U.S. would regard any effort to change the composition of the government by the non-elected TPC at this late stage in its tenure to be an effort to undermine that objective and as such null and void. The U.S. would consider anyone supporting such a disruptive step favoring the gangs to be acting contrary to the interests of the United States, the region, and the Haitian people and will act accordingly." U.S. Department of State’s Western Hemisphere Office : Chronic instability in Haiti is not due to any defect in the Haitian character, culture or constitution. It is the choice of corrupt Haitian politicians who use gangs and other armed groups to create chaos in the streets and then insist on a role in government to turn down the chaos they themselves have created. Real stability will come when political leaders get their power from the support of voters rather than their ability to sow chaos. The members of the CPT who have followed this path are not Haitian patriots. They are criminals like the gangs they conspire with. State Department : The United States maintains its unwavering support for Haiti's stability and security. We view the recent announcement by the CPT as illegal. Haitian Prime Minister Alix Fils-Aimé's tenure as Haiti's Prime Minister remains integral to advancing efforts to combat terrorist gangs and stabilize the country. To the corrupt politicians supporting vicious gangs and who are wreaking terrorism on the country: the United States will ensure there is a steep cost. The current violence caused by gangs can only be stopped with consistent, strong leadership, and with the full support of the Haitian people. Canada : Canada remains committed to supporting efforts to restore the security of the Haitian people and their sovereign and constitutional right to choose their leaders democratically. Canada is deeply concerned by the attempts by several members of the CPT to replace the Prime Minister just days before the end of their term. This action can only weaken the stability and security of the country at a crucial moment in its history. Once again, we call on all members of the CPT to respect their commitment to step down on February 7 and to refrain from further hindering progress toward free and fair elections. Canada remains ready to take action against any actor whose actions jeopardize the peace, security, and stability of Haiti. European Union : The Delegation of the European Union to Haiti and the Embassies of Germany, Spain, and France issue the following statement : "The European Union, Germany, Spain, and France, like many other actors in the international community, are committed to supporting Haiti in its efforts to regain security, prosperity, and democracy. This exceptional commitment, demonstrated through direct support for the national security forces and the deployment of the Anti-Gang Force, reflects the renewed solidarity of the international community with Haiti and the Haitian people. It calls on the Haitian transitional authorities to act responsibly and in the public interest. Any change at the head of government just days before the end of the Presidential Transitional Council would jeopardize the encouraging momentum of the security forces against criminal gangs. Restoring security must remain the absolute priority of the transition." United Kingdom : "The United Kingdom continues to support efforts to strengthen security and stability in Haiti. Inopportune and destabilizing government changes would undermine these efforts as the mandate of the Presidential Transitional Council approaches its expiration on February 7, 2026. We call on all Haitian stakeholders to come together and place Haiti at the heart of their priorities, fighting against gangs and moving towards democratic elections.” See also : SL /HaitiLibre
