Haiti - Education : Ministry provides assurances regarding preparation for State exams 01/06/2025 10:03:30
During a press conference, officials from the Ministry of National Education provided details on the progress of the process leading to the holding of State examinations. According to Yves Roblin, Director General, the Ministry is making considerable progress in the preparation and organization of these examinations. Regarding the 9th years fundamental exams, Director Roblin reiterated that the Ministry has decided to extend the candidate registration period until June 2nd https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44992-haiti-news-zapping.html . After this deadline, no applications will be considered. Renan Michel, Director of the National Office of State Examinations, draws the attention of the education community to the case of certain school principals who are registering 8th year students for the official 9th year exams. Therefore, in order to validate these registrations, the Ministry requires schools to submit a list of students who have completed the 8th year of fundemental education and admitted to 9th year. In the absence of a class decision list, the registration will be invalidated. If, once the registration process is complete, the Ministry finds that school principals have made false declarations, not only will these students not be allowed to take the exam, but sanctions will also be imposed. For his part, Kendy Nicolas, Director of Basic Education, detailed all the actions already carried out by the Ministry to ensure the smooth running of 9th year exams and student success. One of these actions concerned the content taught in class and the exam model administered by schools throughout the year. After analysis, the Directorate of Fundamental Education has established a list of essential educational content which it has made available to school principals, teachers, parents and students. The Ministry encourages schools to use this content, as it does for compensatory learning courses. In the same vein, the Ministry tested the exam models with a sample of public and private schools. It verified whether the time given to students to write each subject was reasonable and whether they understood the instructions. In addition, the Ministry verified whether the exam texts respected the principles of fairness and were consistent with the way teaching was delivered in the classroom and with the official curricula. Miguel Fleurijean, Director of Secondary Education, reviewed all the activities carried out by the Ministry to improve the quality of the preparation and organization of the official exams for the fourth year of secondary school. He first recalled that the entire process is based on a document defining each step and specifying the procedure to be followed and the structure of the examination texts. On this last point, the Director of Secondary Education explained that all final examination texts will consist of three parts. The first part will assess the simplest knowledge (40%), the second the slightly more complex knowledge (40%), and the third the most complex knowledge (20%). Other work carried out to improve success in these exams involves critical work on last year's exam texts (2024) based on the correction grids. This work allowed the Ministry to provide an in-depth assessment of the work actually carried out by teachers in the classroom and the quality of student learning. With this in mind, in accordance with the advice of Minister Augustin Antoine, the Ministry carried out this work for the West and Artibonite departments, which account for more than 60% of candidates in 4th year of secondary. For example, in a subject like chemistry, the evaluation of the correction grids shows that 62% of students are able to recognize formulas, while less than 10% are able to use them correctly and find answers to questions. In philosophy, 90% of students work well on the introduction to the essays they are required to write and answer the questions, while only 1% are able to discover the philosophical significance of the texts to be analyzed. In mathematics, 73% of students did not achieve an average grade. In languages, 93.9% of students demonstrated linguistic skills, 29% demonstrated text interpretation skills, while only 6.5% demonstrated argumentation skills. According to Miguel Fleurijean, these analytical methods help the Ministry understand the difficulties encountered by teachers in their work and those encountered by students in the quality of their learning, and this helps the Ministry make decisions to improve the teaching and learning process. In preparation for the upcoming final exams, Miguel Fleurijean guarantees that all baccalaureate texts will be ready by June 12. According to him, editors, supervisors, proofreaders, and those responsible for proofreading the texts will work tirelessly this year to meet the deadlines.
