Sen. Youri Latortue, President of the Senate Commission Justice and Security confirmed yesterday to have received the records of 28 legal professionals, candidates to one of the six vacant seats of judges for over four years, to the Court of Cassation, the highest court in the country.

After the first treatment, the Commission will send next week to the assembly the list of the candidates. The latter will select 18 names, which will be transmitted in accordance with Article 175 of the Constitution, to the Chief of the Executive. The President of the Republic will appoint six judges on the list of 18 names, before the establishment of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary (Conseil supérieur du Pouvoir Judiciaire - CSPJ) whose the date of the Opening of the Court was set for October 3, 2011. The term of office of judges of the Court of Cassation is 10 years.

Youri Latortue said that the commission is currently investigating on the various applicants and is ready to receive any testimony about the past of the candidates before submitting its report to the Assembly.
