Haiti - Earthquake : FAO - Belgium, agricultural assistance of 500,000 dollars

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Belgium are supporting the Haitian population affected by the recent earthquake and tropical storm Grace. The project entitled "Protection and rehabilitation of the livelihoods of populations affected by the earthquake", funded by Belgium for an amount of US $500,000, aims to provide emergency agricultural assistance to 4,200 vulnerable households (21,000 people ) in three municipalities of the department of Grand'Anse.

In order to support affected households, the project plans to implement the following activities :

Provide seeds and tools for climate-resilient cultivation to 1,500 vulnerable households (7,500 people), of which at least 40% are headed by women, in order to revive their agricultural production for the winter season (October 2021 – February 2022);

Provide vegetable seeds and technical support to 1,200 vulnerable households (6,000 people), of which at least 60% are headed by women, for the diversification of food and income sources;

Distribute goats to 500 households headed by women and girls to create an alternative source of income;

Set up mobile veterinary clinics for the treatment of approximately 4,000 sick domestic animals belonging to at least 1,000 agro-pastoral households.

This project will help mitigate the impact of the earthquake on these populations, allowing them to restore their livelihoods, while helping to improve social cohesion.
