Haiti - Politic : Reactions of Michaëlle Jean on the new President Michel Martelly

Michaëlle Jean, the UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti, although than impressed by the victory of Michel Martelly (67.57%), is not influenced by the popular enthusiasm and adopt a wait position "The results of President Martelly are enviable. How many politicians, elsewhere, would like to have a majority as clearly expressed ? Now it will be necessary to closely monitor every action of his part. Who will be the next Prime Minister? What are the priorities of his mandate ? And especially, how he will honor this great confidence that has been expressed by this election ?"

Concerning the remarks of President Martelly, who recently mentioned in a spirit of national reconciliation, his tendency to the clemency and amnesty for the former Presidents returned from exile, [Jean Claude Duvalier and Jean-Bertand Artistide] Michaëlle Jean, whose parents fled the Duvalier regime to settle in Quebec 40 years ago, has reservations about these statements "Haiti is at the time of choices. The refoundation, that also means to found a Rule of law. There is much talk these days of reconciliation in the country. But who said reconciliation also said truth. In South Africa, when it was considered that reconciliation was necessary to build greater social cohesion, It was also considered that truth was necessary. By respect for the victims. There must be a collective process that allows people to confront history and draw lessons. We must strengthen the memory, because otherwise we risk falling into the same excesses."
