Haiti - Economy : IFC optimistic about the improvement of business climate in Haiti

Friday, Jean Philippe Prosper, Vice-President of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean, concluded his official three-day visit to Haiti. During his stay, Mr. Prosper had talks with the highest authorities on the ongoing efforts to improve the business climate and on the possibilities of strengthening IFC support to the country. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11724-haiti-politic-important-working-session-with-the-international-finance-corporation.html

"I was back in Haiti after two years, and I am very pleased to see the progress. Our customers have a direct impact on job creation and provide opportunities for people to improve their living conditions [...] IFC grows in Haiti and in its assets. This year, we intend to double our portfolio in the country in manufacturing, infrastructure and financial sectors. We also hope to work in the field of agro-industry to support the livelihoods of rural communities, where poverty remains high," declared Jean Philippe Prosper

A working session with Marie Carmelle Jean-Marie, Minister of Economy and Finance allowed the Vice-President of the IFC to discuss priorities for private investment and the support of his institution to the government's strategy.

With representatives of the private sector it was discussed essentially of the opportunities and challenges related to the development of this sector, and particularly the impact of reforms already taken by the government to facilitate business practice. Perspectives for an increased support from the IFC to the private sector were also discussed and the Vice-President said that his institution intended to increase its operations in specific areas, such as hospitality, energy, financial markets and manufacturing, which can further contribute to economic and social development of Haiti.

Commenting on the findings of his visit, Mr. Prosper confirmed that the private sector is the engine of economic growth and that its development will help create employment opportunities and reduce poverty in Haiti. He mentioned some of the achievements of the institution, including: the financial support for the E-Power plant, which increased power generation capacity in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince of about 35%, of projects to support small and medium enterprises in accessing finance and training to be more productive and the textile factory Codevi in Ouanaminthe, where he went last Thursday with Minister Marie Carmelle Jean Marie. This visit allowed not only to assess the impact of this industrial zone in Haiti, with no less than 7,000 jobs created, but also to discuss plans for growth and job creation.
