Haiti - Education : Experimentation of the technological branch of the baccalaureate in computer science

With the aim of improving youth employability, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) contributed to the design and testing of the technology branch of the Haitian baccalaureate, specializing in "IT Support" and "Web Design". This pilot project was conducted in four Haitian secondary schools in the metropolitan area.

This pilot training program was implemented during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 school years under the leadership of the Spanish NGO Jeunesse et Développement and thanks to the technical and professional teaching experience of its local partner, the Salesians of Don Bosco of Haiti.

Following this pilot project, the Secondary Education Directorate of the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (DES/MENFP) has developed a curriculum guide, training plan, and assessment guide, based on a competency-based approach, for the introduction of two new computer science specializations into the Haitian education system: "IT Support" and "Web Design."

The National High School of Pétion-ville and the Dominique Savio, Santa Rosa de Lima, and Marie Dominique Mazzarello schools, which have welcomed these specializations, have seen their capacities strengthened both by the newly acquired equipment and the facilitation of better digital connectivity, and by the training received by its staff to improve the quality of their school's management and administration by also applying the competency-based approach.

During this pilot experiment of the computer science specialty of the new technological baccalaureate, 12 teachers participated, and 113 young people (89 girls and 24 boys) were able to complete their training during the school year that just ended.

Indeed, the development of general digital skills is essential for students to adapt to the current and future world. With these skills, they can not only understand and use computer equipment, but also search and analyze information online, communicate effectively in virtual environments, and open the door to more interactive and personalized learning, which can continue throughout their lives.
