Haiti - Social : The 20 years of GARR - 1991-2011

Last Friday, the Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), Daniel Supplice attended the ceremony of homage organized on the occasion of 20th anniversary of the Support Group for Returnees and Refugees (GARR).

This ceremony was celebrated under the sign of respect and of the promotion of human and dignity of migrants. Before the beginning of the official ceremonies, a minute's silence was observed in memory of the Haitian-dominican activist Sonia Pierre who passed away this December 4th, 2011 at the age of 48 years https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-4406-haiti-social-sonia-pierre-passed-away.html

About fifty participants was present to celebrate the 20th anniversary of GARR, including the former owner of MHAVE, Edwin Paraison, the current Minister Daniel Supplice, the former ambassador of Haiti in the Dominican Republic Guy Alexandre, the President of the Board administration of GARR, Charles Chavannes and Colette Lespinasse the coordinator of the executive office of GARR.

As part of this commemoration, on the sidelines of the World Day of Migrants, the GARR paid a well deserved tribute to eminent personalities, physical and moral who have contributed, who have contributed in one way or another in the progress of their work.

The GARR was born in August 1991, following the decision of the President of the Dominican Republicat that time to expel from its territory any person suspected to be of Haitian nationality.

The Support Group for Returnees and Refugees (GARR) is a platform of associations and NGOs working on migration issues. While not excluding the other poles of migration, the GARR focuses its efforts on the Dominican Republic where live many Haitian immigrants in extremely difficult situations.
