Haiti - Justice : A Colombian delegation visits the 17 ex-soldiers detained in Haiti

A Colombian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Álvaro Leyva and the deputy mediator, Luis Andrés Fajardo, visited the National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince where the Colombians are detained https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34199-haiti-assassination-of-the-president-names-of-the-20-members-of-the-commando-arrested-5-others-still-on-the-run.html suspected of having participated in the assassination of President Jovenell Moïse Wednesday July 7, 2021, while he was in his residence https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34162-haiti-flash-president-jovenel-moise-assassinated-by-mercenaries-official-updated-7am-+-video.html

The visit had a humanitarian character, which is why the officials gave the Colombian detainees hygiene kits and several letters that their relatives had sent them from Colombia.

The Ministry Álvaro Leyva indicated in a press release that with the recent opening of a Consulate in Port-au-Prince, it intended to provide assistance to Colombian residents and in particular, to those who are in prison.

According to the Colombian Ombudsman's Office, former Colombian soldiers remain detained in the Port-au-Prince prison without formal legal proceedings having been initiated and in precarious conditions of health, food and overcrowding...

The families of imprisoned Colombians have requested help from the Colombian Government to establish an independent court in a third country and coordinate a humanitarian flight so their loved ones can visit them.

Lawyer Juan Pablo Quintero, who provides legal advice from Colombia to some of the detainees' families, assured that the former soldiers are still under preventive measure and that there has been "no adequate communication regarding a formal link with the criminal procedure."
