The Ministry of the Interior of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana (South America), announced Saturday, November 14, that 26 Haitian citizens (10 men, 9 women and 7 children) in an irregular migratory situation, were found in a hotel in Georgetown (the capital) and in a bus along the Mabura highway, during two operations of the police, specifying that these clandestine migrants were without documents.

In addition, 5 people of Haitian nationality were arrested in connection with this case, accused of alleged trafficking of Haitian citizens in Guyana.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior explained that the majority of Haitians come to Guyana only as a transit point because they do not need a Visa and enjoy the same treatment and reception as other citizens of the country of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).

Haitians passing through Guayna end up (for the most part) in Brazil to work in agriculture, but others travel to French Guiana in Suriname and other parts of South America, where their close live, taking advantage of the porosity of the poorly guarded borders to the east with Suriname, to the west with Venezuela and to the south with Brazil...

In 2019, former Guyana Minister of Citizenship Winston Felix said there were around 7,000 Haitians living illegally in the country, while 7 years earlier they were only 188.
