Haiti - Security : Crime, the Prime Minister tries to reassure...

While Prime Minister Lafontant says that the security situation in the country is better today than it was a year ago, officials of human rights organizations continue to denounce the resurgence of people killed.

Insecurity in the metropolitan area is worrying and the number of violent deaths almost doubled from May to early June. The Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, for the month of April, counted 16 deaths, 13 of them with bullets and 3 by knife, 16 also dead in May whereas for the first 6 days of June the number of people killed already stands at 27 !

However, last week, during a meeting of the National Police Superior Council (CSPN) around the security situation of the country, the Prime Minister warned against any intention to dramatize the situation, especially on social networks, claiming that according to the statistics he has available, the number of deaths recorded to date is lower than those recorded for the same period in 2016 (without providing the figures)...

Michel-Ange Gédéon, the Director General of the Haitian National Police (PNH), deplored the fact that most of these killings were perpetrated by criminals released by the judiciary for various reasons... nevertheless affirming that the PNH will continue to track down these criminals relentlessly...

For his part, Heidi Fortuné, the Minister of Justice calls for the punishment of judges who violate the law and thus are accomplices of these criminals, informing of an upcoming meeting with the members of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ) on this subject.
