On Thursday at the Marriott Hotel, the Port-au-Prince City Council held a symposium bringing together donors, representatives of the private business sector, state authorities and concerned sectors, around a solution to the management of waste and rubbish, under which crumbles a little more every day, Port-au-Prince for years...

Let's recall that Port-au-Prince and the metropolitan area produce on average between 6,000 and 8,000 tons of waste per day. At the level of the capital, only 28% of the waste is collected. The waste collection capacity of the Metropolitan Residue Collection Service (SMCRS) is only 13% of the volume of detritus produced every day. On their side, private operators collect 15% on a daily basis. In summary, 72% of the garbage produced in the metropolitan area is not picked up.

This symposium, which was held under the theme "Public Private Partnership for Solid Waste Management in Port-au-Prince", was an opportunity for the new municipal team to explore concrete and effective solutions for waste management.

In his speech, international development expert Mathew Chandy, a special guest at the symposium, presented several strategies that could be used by the authorities to solve this problem: urban planning, specialized landfill plans, tools and equipment, legislation, site and installation of waste treatment etc...

"Waste management is a big problem, but we want to assume our responsibility," said Youri Chévry, the new mayor of Port-au-Prince who says he is ready to engage in political action and dialogue with stakeholders concerned to raise the challenge of a clean city.

In addition, the Mayor of Port-au-Prince announced the launch of a campaign to clean up the capital for the end-of-year celebrations, which will start on Friday 9 December and which will end in February 2017...
