Haiti - Health : Cholera progresses rapidly

In order to curb the resurgence of the cholera epidemic in Haiti after Hurricane Matthew, the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), supported by its partners, conducts sustained actions, such as : the deployment of mobile rapid response teams in the most affected areas, carrying out cleaning and decontamination work, the routing of inputs medicines, the use of purification products and the systematization of the purification of drinking water.

During the post-Matthew period, epidemiological services of the Ministry of Health reported 1,424 cholera cases (510 to October 12 https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-18959-haiti-cholera-over-500-cases-of-cholera-post-matthew.html ). For its part, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Haiti in collaboration with humanitarian partners reported 2,271 suspected cases of cholera from 4 to 19 October.

Recall that according to the latest information provided by the authorities, 53% of facilities visited in Grand'Anse are unusable and 6 Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) are damaged. In the South, 29% of 15 hospital visits are unusable, 3 of the 4 CTC were destroyed and one is badly damaged.

The main organizations supporting the sector are: The Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED), Médecins du Monde (MdM) (Canada and France), Solidarités International, Action Against Hunger (ACF), Doctors Without Borders (MSF Belgium).

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) in Haiti, confirmed that a multinational team of experts was deployed in Jérémie, Les Cayes, Port-au-Prince to support the Government's efforts in the post-Matthew response and also control the risk of outbreak of cholera in the Great South.
