Haiti - France : Adoption in progress and cholera

The situation of Haitian children, whose the procedure for adoption has been committed before the earthquake, continues to be subject to the attention of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

For the 372 children whose cases are still under process, an agreement was reached with the Haitian Ministry of Interior and Territorial Communities (MICT), to allow the issuance of a passport within one to two months after Judgement instead of six or twelve months, recorded before the earthquake. This new process, implemented since July 26, allows the delivery of "long-stay visas adoption" for the benefit of the children concerned. In addition, it comes with all the legal guarantees both from the Haitian authorities that the French authorities, in order to avoid possible abuses.

Since the announcement of the cholera epidemic in Haiti, a special vigilance was given to nurseries in which there are many children, and especially for the 372 children still ongoing a process of adoption by the French families. No nursery is not currently in the infected area.

The services of the embassy in Port-au-Prince have nevertheless decided to step up, since October 22, 2010, the systematic visits to institutions. A multidisciplinary team (doctor, police, international volunteers) has the mission to train nurses and their persons in charge to hygiene and disease prevention for avoiding the spread of the epidemic and respond immediately if suspected. This action, under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) is organized in a coordinated manner with other operators of public health and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
