Haiti - Education : 3 Haitians out of 10 are still illiterate

Tuesday at the Ritz Kinam, ended the National Forum on Literacy and Adult Education, which mobilized during two days, around the heme "Working Together for Haiti free of illiteracy", of national and international partners at the initiative of the Ministry of National Education and the Secretariat of State for Literacy (SEA).

Take stock of the literacy actions and identify new challenges to eradicate illiteracy, were the two main objectives of these assizes.

Renold Telfort, Director General of the Ministry of National Education that opened the Forum on behalf of the Minister Nesmy Manigat invited all sectors to contribute to guaranteeing the right to education for all, especially seniors which have their role to play in the revival of Haitian society.

"Illiteracy is a source of misery and poverty," said Renold Telfort who pleaded for a common front and synergy of all the forces, in order to meet the challenges of illiteracy. Recalling that 3 out of 10 Haitians are still illiterate in the country, according to data of the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics "non mastery of these basic skills can have adverse consequences on the development of a society," stressed Director Telfort who said wait for the recommendations of the Forum participants in order to implement the desired reforms to the success of the Literacy Campaign.

Mozart Clerisson, the Secretary of State for Literacy emphasized the importance of this approach consisting in evaluating halfway efforts during the 20 years of existence of the SEA, in order to combat illiteracy and gain new perspectives on the eve of the 6th literacy campaign in Haiti. He considered that we should learn from the path traveled, good or bad, to avoid past mistakes and take positive initiatives for the next steps. Recalling that about 3,000 literacy centers are already operational in 10 departments across 130 communes of the country within the framework of start of this 6th stage of the literacy campaign.

Recalling also that the mission of the SEA is based on five main areas, namely: political, technical, financial, social and national, the Secretary of State said it expected of this Forum, three main results: the remobilization of all the layers and all sectors of society; the remobilization of all former SEA partners and the gathering of all the intelligences, skills and abilities in order to find the necessary solutions to illiteracy "The universal schooling must walk alongside literacy".
