Haiti - Culture : A Workshop «rara» financed by the IDB

Since August 2013, the musicians of the walking band Follow Jah working on an educational project for young audiences https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-9209-haiti-culture-idb-supports-the-project-of-caracoli-and-follow-jah.html . Supervised by Caracoli, the musicians of Follow Jah proposed to develop a workshop around the rara to young audiences.

For several weeks, they work with stakeholders to design and build the workshop, where they present the music of the traditional rara, its recent evolution in the walking bands, the main instruments that compose it, etc... The workshop is designed so that children can sing, dance and play with musicians who have adapted for them well-known songs of the young audience.

Pascal Joseph, President of the walking band Follow Jah declared "I am very pleased with this initiative because it is the first time that an educational project is implemented by a walking band, furthermore supported by an international body. I take this opportunity to thank the IDB. I hope that we will be accompanied by subsequently in our effort of transmission among young generations. This is an important issue for our culture."

For their part, the musicians Réginald Joseph and Ricardo Batraville, say they themselves have learned many things about the rara, particularly under its most traditional form and they are eager to share this knowledge with children, in order to better makes know that Haitian tradition, recognized by UNESCO as "the first native tradition of Haiti."

Recall that the project of Caracoli and Follow Jah was selected among 867 proposals received by the Cultural Development Program of the Cultural Center of the Inter-American Development Bank and is one of 45 projects in 25 countries supported by the IDB.
