Haiti - Politic : Meeting of Women Political Leaders

As part of the project (2013-2014) aimed at strengthening the capacity of women within political parties, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance - International IDEA, organized Wednesday, a first working meeting with over fifty women involved in politics to make them more active in their respective political party. An initiative that will be repeated in various regions of the country. At this meeting, representatives of various political parties have exchanged extensively on obstacles that prevent Haitian women to develop their capacities in political parties.

Among the political parties participants in this meeting include :"Parti Louvri baryè" (PLB), the "Rally of Progressive National Democrats" (RDNP) represented by Mirlande Hyppolite Manigat, the Haitian party "tèt kale" (PHTK) represented by Danielle Saint-Lot, the party "Respect" represented by former Senator Evelyne Cheron, the "Haitian Christian Democratic Party" (PDCH), represented by Marie-Claude France, the "Parti Repons peyizan" (PRP), "Organization of People in Struggle" (OPL), the "National Citizens Movement" (MNC) and the "Haitian National Christian Party" (PNCH).

The former Minister for Women, Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassègue, Program Director in Haiti for IDEA International, said it was important for women to join the state apparatus in elected office or nominative. Regretting that despite the amendment of the Constitution of 1987, which established a minimum quota of 30% participation of women in national life, apart from a few parties, women were not many.

Several participants considered it essential that Haitian women assume their political responsibilities, as they are already socially and economically.
