Haiti - Justice : More than 1,000 Haitians fugitives refugees in Dominican Republic

According to Dominican police sources, more than 1,000 Haitians fugitives, who escaped from prisons during the Haitian earthquake of January 2010, are still at large in Dominican territory, most of them had been convicted for murder, aggravated assault, and sequestration of Haitian business leaders, humanitarian and foreign dignitaries, whose governments have paid large ransoms for their release.

This figure could be higher, based on the report of the Haitian government indicating that 3,500 prisoners [including Dominican criminals and traffickers] escaped from the prison during the earthquake and only a small number was taken. Moreover, the statistics of the Dominican Police indicate that for every four or five crimes on their territory, at least one was committed by Haitians or Haitians were involved.

A document of the Dominican police, said that in different jurisdictions, many Haitian prisoners are kept, until the Haitian authorities confirm their identification, noting that most of these fugitives, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 20 and 30 years.

Recall that the Chiefs of Police Haitians and Dominican met recently in Jimani, to address the issue of fugitives and agreed to strengthen their cooperation.
