Haiti - Petit-Goâve : Potier, a town affected by cholera
Saturday, November 16, a delegation of members of the Haitian Red Cross, accompanied by Sandra Jules, the Mayor of Petit-Goâve, went in particular in Potier, one of the localities of the 12th section where we have already identified more than 75 cases of cholera, in order to awareness people about the precautions to take to avoid the disease and prevent its spread.
During this visit, the nurse Percie explained how we can get cholera and how to protect themselves. She then outlined the first steps to do when you are infected by performing demonstrations on the techniques of hand washing and preparation of oral rehydration. Sandra Jules urged people to follow these instructions.
Finally, Dr. Fred Jasmin, President of the Haitian Red Cross of Petit-Goâve, assisted by other members, distributed posters and kits consisting of soap, treated water and oral rehydration salts to the people of Potier which has now a Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC), following the steps taken by the local authorities. Apparently satisfied with the presence and commitment of authorities, residents took the opportunity to thank the UCS-Goavïenne, INEPA, the Mayor of Petit-Goâve, the deputy of Petit-Goâve, Jacques Stevenson Thimoléon, the Haitian Red Cross and Doctors of the World (Spain) for their support.
In addition, Sunday, Nov. 17, at the initiative of the Association of Victims of Cholera in Petit-Goâve (AVCP), led by Lionel Saint-Preux, several hundred people, dressed in white, demonstrated peacefully, under police escort, to seek justice and compensation of the Minustah for all victims of cholera. The AVCP calling for the immediate reopening of CTC in 12 communal sections of Petit-Goâve, while protesters call for a clear position of the government in this case "If Mr. Martelly is actually the President of the masses, it must clearly decide for victims of cholera. That he takes openly a position !" The demonstration ended without incident.
