Haiti - Reconstruction : Portfolio Review of International Cooperation

Monday, back from his European tour, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, also Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, accompanied by several ministers and members of his private office, proceeded at the Ministry of Planning to the opening of the week of the "Portfolio Review of International Cooperation."

That approach that seeks to identify with the various agencies involved in the development process of the country and the problems faced by projects running in Haiti must enable the Prime Minister to make quick arrangements to facilitate the release of funds and the implementation of these projects to the benefit of the population.

For its first working session, Laurent Lamothe met Monday morning, a delegation from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) led by Mr. Agustín Aguirre. During this meeting, the Minister of Planning noted that the objective of this initiative was to create a permanent forum to discuss efforts at the level of international cooperation, with the ultimate aim to accelerate the implementation of projects and make the country out of underdevelopment. Too, he promised to work jointly with the IDB for the disbursement of $ 500 million for the financing of initiatives in the education sector, which include among others: the construction of 96 new schools , training of 7,000 teachers and school fees of more than 200,000 children under the Universal Schooling Program Free and Compulsory (PSUGO).

In the afternoon, the Minister Lamothe met with a delegation from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), led by U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Pamela White. He took the opportunity to review the Portfolio of the USAID while identifying obstacles that hinder the progress of certain programs and projects in Haiti.

Representatives of USAID announced the construction of 1,800 homes in the North East especially in Caracol. The two sides also reviewed the budget available at the level of this cooperation, which amounts to more than one billion U.S. dollars for housing, energy, infrastructure, agriculture and food security.

Recall that the review of the portfolio of International Cooperation, is part of the institutional reform advocated by the Government Lamothe, hence the importance of periodic consultation between international cooperation agencies and the Haitian government institutions.
