Haiti - Reconstruction : Agreement with Chile, for the construction of social housing

Rodrigo Perez Mackenna, the Chilean Minister of Housing and Urban Development who arrived in Haiti on Tuesday for a few hours, signed in Port-au-Prince, with the Chancellor Pierre-Richard Casimir, in conjunction with the Housing and Public Building Construction Unit (UCLBP), a cooperation agreement to support the housing policy of the Government of Haiti through the "Sites and Services" program, implemented by the UCLBP.

The "Sites and Services" program aims to make available to families without, of managed and sanitized plots with basic infrastructure. Under this agreement, the Chilean Government will work to build houses in Haiti for families in vulnerable situations, a project that will help reduce the shortage of social housing, affecting Haiti.

This project will benefit has nearly 500 families, is funded by a Swedish-Chilean capital of nearly U.S. $ 2 million and a contribution from the Government of Haiti of 3.3 million. Each housing unit will cost about $ 10,000 and the beneficiaries will participate in the construction of their home, as part of the assisted self-construction" program, which included advice on the care of their future home.

For the Chancellor Pierre-Richard Casimir, the signing of this agreement is the expression of enhanced cooperation between Haiti and Chile.

It is the United Nations Programme for Development (UNDP) who will manage the funds allocated for the implementation of the program. To this end, a tripartite agreement was signed between UCLBP, Chile and UNDP, as the trust agency and of technical assistance.

"It is an honor for us to be able to contribute our grain of sand to the building, o continue to work with Haiti, especially in the context of this program," declared the Minister of Chile, who stressed the interest of Chile to participate in this program.
