Haiti - Social : Cité Maria, a model of participative community organization

Sunday, Marie Carmelle Rose Anne Auguste, the Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Human Rights and the Fight against extreme poverty, participated in the fifth distribution of Baskets of solidarity in Cité Maria, 1st Communal section of Turgeau.

Since 11 April 2013, the National Social Assistance program "Ede pèp" introduced a multiple intervention in Cité Maria, as part of a social dialogue with approximately 450 families living in extreme poverty, in order to empower them to organize themselves to improve the living environment of their neighborhood.

This intervention goes beyond the distribution of baskets of solidarity, the 11 of each month to more than 450 heads of families. Note that 240 high-risk families have benefited from a solidarity voucher and that 117 mothers have integrated the conditional component "cash transfer" of "Ti Manman Cheri" through the Mixed School of Mont-Joli and Mixed School of the divinité. A first payment of two months was made on June 10 to mothers of Ti Manman Cheri of these two schools.

In addition, the recruitment of 800 mothers was also conducted at the National School Republic of the United States, to ensure better coverage of the 1st communal section of Turgeau.

Since that past six months, the program "Ede pèp" seeks to improve the package of interventions to fight against extreme poverty and social inclusion of disadvantaged areas including, among others :

- The renovation of the houses;

- Access to conditional cash, to encourage mothers to keep their children in school;

- The establishment of a fixed restaurant with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, to fight against food insecurity;

- The right of solidarity for more than 200 families in extreme poverty;

- Support for the disabled of Cité Maria.

Minister Auguste says that these interventions would not be effective without the sense of rigor of Committee of the zone, consisting of CASEC and some engaged citizens of the Cité Maria. "The dynamism and civic engagement, manifested by the Committee of the Cité Maria, deserve to be followed by other neighborhoods. Distributions are done in the order and discipline [...] even the children come get the basket for their mothers, in complete security, as it happened on Sunday."
