Haiti - Politic : Twinning program between Haitian and American municipalities

The one-week official visit of Lucie Tondreau, first Haitian woman elected Mayor of North Miami journalist and activist (born in the Valley of Jacmel), ended on Saturday, August 3. "I returned home to broaden contacts with my Haitian counterparts, but also in order to prepare the ground for the visit other American colleagues in an exchange perspective," declared the Mayor, who wishes that every American municipality whose mayor is African-American, develops a partnership with a Haitian municipality.

During its tour in Haiti, the mayor of North Miami, held talks with interim executive officers (serving as mayor) in the municipalities of Petionville, Mirebalais, Carrefour, Pétion-Ville, Mirebalais, Saut d’Eau, Carrefour, Croix-des-Bouquets, Arcahaie, Jacmel and Les Cayes, with the objective of presenting a twinning program between Haitian and U.S. municipalities to facilitate the development of cooperation in areas such as education, tourism, infrastructure and civil protection. The executive officers favorably welcomed this program, considering that such twinning with U.S. municipalities would benefit their community.

In addition, the Mayor of North Miami, whose city is twinned with Delmas since 2008, considered that it was necessary to reassess the agreement, so that the effects are more visible to the public and promised to work with the Haitian authorities to change the negative image of Haiti projected by the international press.

Note that the Haitian-American Harry Agnant Larosilière, first black mayor of Plano, a suburb of Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas [elected in May 2013], will be one of the Member of the next delegation of U.S. elected, who will visit Haiti.
