Haiti - Economy : Haiti's ports, drivers of growth and economic development

Under the high patronage of President Michel Martelly and Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, the National Port Authority (APN) organizes on 12 and 13 August 2013, a symposium on the modernization of the Haitian port sector. This symposium is intended, among other things :

  • To think the port development in a synergistic approach ;

  • To attract investment in a public-private partnership ;

  • To bring state actors to better appropriate the content and objectives of the reform and get involved ;

  • To harmonize the reform process with the vision of the administration Martelly / Lamothe ;

  • To raise awareness Parliament on the need to equip the port sector of a new legal framework ;

  • To raise awareness the Executive on the need to support the financing of the construction of port facilities ;

  • To help the public opinion to better understand the role of the APN in the development of sector ;

  • To inform potential investors and partners on the reform project of the port sector and partnership opportunities.

This symposium aims to be a major founder event of an approach of ports of Haiti as vectors of growth and economic development of the country, a space for reflection to :

  • Building with port stakeholders, the argument about the implications and expectations of the proposed sectoral modernization ;

  • Determine the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in this business modernization;

  • Align programs and projects in the sector on major economic and social projects to rebuilding Haiti ;

  • Obtain commitment from decision makers in the orientation of their policies towards modernization of the port sector and their commitment to the search for ways and legal means, technical and financial for the real accompaniment of the APN to the implementation of the reform and modernization of the port ;

  • Make a commitment with members of the port community to create at the end of the Symposium, a permanent mechanism for dialogue on issues faced by the sector and trace back to policy makers as well as technical and financial partners, proposals and recommendations raised ;

  • Produce a document of the Symposium including recommendations and resolutions from the workshops.
