Haiti - Economy : Towards a lifting of the ban on Dominican poultry products...?

On the sidelines of the VIIIth Petrocaribe Summit in Managua (Nicaragua), the President Michel Martelly, who met with President Danilo Medina on the issue of import ban of poultry products from the Dominican Republic to Haiti, declared that within 10 days, the Dominican and Haitian officials should provide a new decision on the crisis of eggs and chickens, without specifying if it would be the lifting of the ban.

However on Monday at an event organized by the Canadian Embassy in the Dominican Republic, Ambassador of Haiti to the Dominican Republic, Fritz Cinéas was much more specific about the crisis, saying that Haiti will "lift the ban implemented by the Haitian authorities on Dominican poultry products due to a suspicion of bird flu which was then excluded. It will come soon," adding that "the dispute does not affect relations between the two countries [...] Forget the past and walk forward together [...] on both sides, our residents are doing everything possible to correct the problems we need to fix, so that relations are more cordial and fraternal."

For his part, President Medina in Managua, indicated that the problem of Haitian leaders were economic due to the non-collection of customs taxes related to these products, taxes imposed by Haiti to support its local investors in the poultry industry [10% eggs and 20% of poultry], losses representing several million dollars "What the Haitian authorities need to do is to put in place strategies to force their citizens that buy products in the Dominican Republic to pay the fees (customs)," advised the Dominican President.
