Haiti - Social : The Association «Kouraj» deplores the homophobic statements of a group of religious leaders

For some time, the gay Haitians with thewith the support of Haitian and foreign institutions struggling against stigma, deploying a series of initiatives in order to obtain legal recognition.

Friday, Charlot Jeudy, President of the "Haitian Association of defending the rights of homosexuals" (Kouraj) deplored the homophobic statements, against the legalization of homosexuality in Haiti, held last Tuesday by Pastor Gérald Forges, President of the initiative of so-called "moral and religious" organizations, which launched a warning against what he calls "the acceptance of sexual deviance in Haitian society" recalling that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, "for reasons among other things, of its unhealthy practices." Practices that according to him "could attract curses on the country." In addition, Pastor Gérald Forges, strongly opposes against any intention of Parliament to legalize gay marriage in Haiti.

Charlot Jeudy, while declaring recognize the rights of religious leaders to gather in association and express freely, asks them to respect the rights of homosexuals to join to defend their own interests "The Haitian Constitution recognizes that all citizens are equal in rights and titles and that the State has an obligation to ensure the protection of all without distinction of any kind," saying that being gay in Haiti has nothing illegal "There is nothing that condemns or punishes homosexuality in the Haitian Constitution."

Noting that while some Haitian gay, refuse to accept their sexual orientation, it is because the Haitian society is homophobic, Charlot Jeudy reiterated the determination of the Association to carry out not only the legal battle, but also that of the struggle for social acceptance of gays Haitian, noting that "stigma is against the universal and human values."
