Haiti - Elections : Important meeting at the Primature on Elections

Monday at the Fort Dauphine room, of the Primature, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, chaired an important meeting, which was attended, among others by, Emmanuel Ménard, President of the Transitional College of the Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP) and Electoral advisers, Ms. Sophie de Caen, Senior Director in Haiti, of United Nations Programme for Development (UNDP), Carl Alexander, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Haiti, Me Jean Renel Sanon, Minister of Justice and David Bazile, the Minister of the Interior and communities. The objective was to discuss arrangements to be adopted to facilitate the organization of upcoming senatorial and local elections in the country.

In the context where the CTCEP work to carry the elections for the renewal of one third of the Senate and local government, the Prime Minister continues to invest in all steps able to mentor and allow the CTCEP to start the electoral machine.

In this regard, the Head of Government, who reiterated that the elections were "inevitable and a priority for the government," has created a working group composed of international partners, representatives of the Primature and CTCEP to facilitate the achievement immediate of decisions and projects related to the success of the electoral process, stating that the two people of the Primature, who will join the Group will ensure the monitoring day to day, on any points that CTCEP would need to work.

The President of CTCEP explained that the one-month delay in the delivery to the National Palace of the electoral law [which will have then to be orwarded to the Parliament for ratification], is due to several political parties, who had not submitted their proposals within the time... In addition, he revealed a series of innovations in the electoral law, the vote of the diaspora, the early voting for the elderly and disabled and the electronic voting...

For his part, Adviser Léopold Berlanger (Representing the Superior Council of the Judiciary) indicated that it was imperative to vote the electoral law in July and have the necessary financial resources in order to hold elections this year. Recall that the cost of elections could amount to US$31 million. The state should contribute up to US$14, half of these funds are already available.
