Haiti - Social : Celebration of the Feast of the Agriculture and Labor in Doucette

The peasant organization "mouvman kole zepol" (Mkoze) led Willio Saint-Cyr, and Fabien Saint-Fleur, celebrated on May 1, in the locality of Doucette, 11th communal section of Petit-Goave, the feast of the agriculture and labor Wednesday around the theme "ansanm ann pote kole pou bay agrikilti a jaret ak pwoteje anviwonnman an" in the presence of many peasants and students from Community School Beatrice.

On this occasion, various activities were held: awareness, motivation, experience sharing followed by making resolutions, conferences and debates on the importance of agriculture, parade, distribution and planting of seedlings, theater performances on functions of the tree by the young of Doucette.

According to agronomists speakers, Ms. Martha Duperly and Ms. Esther Pany, the agriculture is of great importance in the country. "The more we produce more than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will increase and more wealth will be created. Agriculture is a vital source that feeds men and generates jobs. In the 70s, agriculture accounted for 70% of the national economy, today it represents only 50% [...] This is due to many factors such as: erosion, deforestation, weatherenvironmental degradation, landslides, loss of soil fertility. It is therefore necessary to plant trees, protect the environment and boost agricultural production [...] The solution will require a consciousness of everyone and the reviewof the Rural Code." Both speakers encouraged the farmers to cultivate the land and the people to consume local products.

During the same day, the Movement of YouthDefenders for the Progress of Haiti (MOJEDEPH), held at the Lycée Faustin Soulouque, a panel discussion on the contribution of agriculture and tourism in strengthening the national economy. The agronomists speakers : André Victor and Sterlin Frenel, argued before an audience composed mainly of young people, that agricultural production and tourism are two main conditions but not sufficient for the development of Haiti. Emphasizing the practice of a agriculture environment friendly they called on young people to change themselves their community, to start their own business and not be dependent on state aid.
