Haiti - Politic : 2 teams of Caricom expected shortly in Port-au-Prince

The Office of Communication of the Presidency informs that the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, on an official visit in Guyana, had a very productive meeting with the Secretary General of CARICOM, Ambassador Irwin Larocque, Thursday, March 21, 2013. The discussions focused on the major challenges faced by the region, Haiti's participation in the activities of Caricom, the conclusions of the 24th meeting of the Intersessional Heads of State and Government of CARICOM, which was held in Port-au-Prince on 18 and 19 February 2013, in particular the regional security, the upcoming Caricom-United States summit, the process of reform of the Secretariat of CARICOM, the intra-regional transport, health, education and the launch of the aid strategy to trade in Haiti, on June 11, 2013.

The President and the Secretary General of CARICOM agreed for prior to the end of June 2013, a technical team of the CARICOM Secretariat will visit Haiti to assess the progress in the implementation of various components of the Caricom Single Market and to discuss of funding opportunities for other Member States wishing to acquire the technology allowing them to trace agricultural products.

Another team from the CARICOM Secretariat, headed by the Secretary General will visit Haiti soon to make a general statement to members of the Haitian Government and representatives of civil society on the activities and operations of Caricom.

The Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pierre Richard Casimir, took the opportunity to sign a memorandum of understanding with his counterpart of Guyana, Carolyn Rodriguez, on the transfer of the technology allowing to trace agricultural products.

The President Michel Martelly will leave the Republic of Guyana this Friday for Suriname where he is expected for another 48-hours official visit.
