Carl Siebentritt, director of the Narcotics Affairs Section at the US Embassy announced that the U.S. government plans to build two new prisons in Haiti, Petit-Goâve (150 places) and Cabaret (200 places for women, including a textile workshop).

These new Detention centers, which will improve the conditions in Haitian prisons, are part of the fight against overcrowding in Haiti "By constructing new prisons that are consistent with international human rights standards, the [US state] department seeks to alleviate this overcrowding and to reduce the spread of disease and violence," says Carl Siebentritt.

According to public documents, the project would cost between $5 and $10 million. Contract bids are due in early March.
