Haiti - Reconstruction : The SRC is investing in the future of Haiti

After the earthquake of January 2010, the Swiss Red Cross (SRC) has intervened to Palmiste-à-Vin, a town located on the heights of Léogâne, to build 600 homes and develop a drinking water supply.

At the end of this project, the SRC, together with the German Red Cross, construction professionals of SRC have provided a course of 3 months, for 98 men and 2 women, a theoretical and practical training in earthquake-resistant construction. A local intended to house the Red Cross as well as community centers and small shops were built "These young people from the small peasantry, have thus a chance to secure an income and to put into practice at home or in their village, the skills they have acquired," declared Fabio Molinari, Program manager.

Other investment in the future, the measures implemented by the Red Cross to improve the health status of the rural population and protect it of a new cholera outbreak. To this end, a local medical team, intervenes in the villages and remote hamlets of Palmiste-à-Vin, to educate people on hygiene that enable them to be protect against infection. Village committees disinfect houses and latrines.

The construction of 1,200 latrines funded by the SRC will be completed in 2013.

In addition, SRC experts, train the collaborators of the new blood transfusion service run by the Haitian Red Cross in Port-au-Prince. They are thus again able, to produce products intended to ensure the coagulation in the case of platelet deficiency.
