Haiti - Reconstruction : The peacekeepers Korean definitely leave Haiti

The mission of the Korean military engineering company of the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), deployed in Léogâne since March 30, 2010, reaching the end of its mission and will definitely leave Haiti on 22 December.

Amunátegui Mariano Fernández, the Secretary-General's Special Representative in Haiti, warmly thanked the Korean government for putting peacekeepers at the disposal of the Minustah and paid tribute to the military engineering company for its efforts in the areas of reconstruction and humanitarian aid, in the town of Léogâne, following the January 2010 earthquake.

Since his arrival in Haiti, the Korean military engineering company, has put its technical and material capacities to contribution for the clearing of sites of some schools of the town of Léogâne, including primary schools "Notre Dame" and "Guerin". It also helped to rehabilitate about 100 km of roads, including the section from Leogane to Jacmel. In addition, many public sites have been cleaned and of channels clean out through intervention. 17 dredging operations of rivers to prevent flooding have been carried out.

In the health sector, the company has conducted free consultations to 60,000 patients and improved the water supply of the population léogânaise. As a contribution to the academic and professional training of youth in the region, it has offered courses in computer science, Taekwondo and handling of heavy equipment.

We were informed that Colonel Beomgi Yoon, Commander of the Korean military engineering company, donated on behalf of his Government, of equipment, materials and camp facilities worth approximately U.S. $ 9.5 million, to the Government of Haiti, provided they are used for non-military purposes.
