On the occasion of the "World Day Against AIDS", this 1st December 2012 the President Michel Martelly and the First Lady, Ms. Sophia Martelly, have a special thought for people with AIDS and those infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) around the world and in particular in Haiti.

The new report from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) shows that aa unprecedented acceleration of the AIDS response generates results for the benefit of people. This report indicates that the number of new HIV/AIDS cases has been reduced by more than 50% in 25 countries with low and middle income. The greatest progress concerning the reduction of new HIV infections among children. Haiti is on the list of the most advanced countries in terms of research and accompaniment for people living with HI /AIDS.

According to Dr. Reynold Grand'Pierre, Director of the Directorate of Family Health (DSF) in Haiti before the earthquake of January 2010, were estimated to 120,000 the number of people living with HIV in Haiti, whose 6.800 children under 15 years. "The public information campaign on the Prevention of HIV Transmission from Mother to Child (PMTCT) was launched to eliminate by 2015 the transmission of HIV and syphilis from mother to child, throughout the territory of Haiti."

Dr. Guirlène Calixte, Programme Officer at "Management Ressource Community Health" (MARCH), ensures that PMTCT, has allowed significant advances in Haiti. "In 2010, MARCH tracked 3,600 pregnant women and less than 30 of them were positive," recalling that "the prevalence of HIV / AIDS is currently around 2% while in Haiti before 2000, it was 6%."

The Head of State welcomed the progress made in the last twenty years in the fight against the spread of the disease, and especially in his Administration:

• The coordinating body of countries of the Global Fund in Haiti, whose the First Lady holds the Presidency, has been ranked among the world's most dynamic ;

• The reduction of prevalence rate to 1.9% ;

• The major efforts to ensure the involvement of all sectors in the response to HIV ;

• The increasing number of patients with access to medicines.

"We are very aware of the Millennium Development Goals and we are working to get closer of them. We are strengthening the health system as a whole, because the results in term of health can not be achieved with our current health care system. And we count on UNAIDS to help us in this plea, that we do with our donors, so that funds allocated to Haiti for AIDS can allow a strengthening transversal of health system," declared the President Martelly.

The President Martelly believes it is essential that this struggle is leads also on the front of the stigma that must be permanently banned. "Working together for an inclusive society where discrimination of any kind will be totally eliminated."
