Haiti - Politic : Enlargement of the Haitian-Ecuadorian cooperation

During a meeting with his Ecuadorian counterpart, Rafael Correa, at the XXII Iberoamerican Summit of Heads of State and Government, the President Michel Joseph Martelly has called for an enlargement of the cooperation between Haiti and Ecuador.

While recalling the role played by Haiti in the history of the peoples of Latin America, the Head of State stressed the progress made since the recent visit of the President of Ecuador in Haiti, 27 September, cooperation in favor of disabled persons and the implementation of an extensive partnership program launched early last fall and commended the work done by the contingent of Ecuadorian engineers working actively in the development of agricultural infrastructure and roads.

For his part, President Correa announced that the Ecuador Chancellery work already on a new type of cooperation with Haiti, which will be released in the coming days and invite Haiti to send more executives in training in Ecuador especially at the level of Ministries of Justice and Defense.

Two areas of cooperation have been proposed and/or strengthened :

- Transfer of skills in the field of human development bonus ;

- Exchange of experiences in democratization and reform of the state, especially in regard to the strengthening of institutions.

"Our cooperation with Haiti must be effective. You can count on us," affirmed Rafael Correa.

During his trip to Ecuador last July, President Martelly had called for better integration of the Haitian diaspora in this country. An approach welcomed by President Correa who specified, "If you know cases of migrants who have not been regularized, please let us know."

Given the importance of the Haitian diaspora in Ecuador, the Head of State took the opportunity to request the opening of an embassy of Ecuador in Haiti and of a Haitian Consulate in Ecuador to strengthen bilateral relations. "You can do it and we will offer you the premises of Historic Centre of Quito," said President Correa.

In addition, at this meeting, Haiti has confirmed its support for the candidacy of Ecuador to the Executive Council of the International Labour Organisation (WTO), ruled on the fulfillment of agreements of the UNASUR for obtaining the credit of $200 million and promised to support the efforts of Ecuador on the diplomatic front.
