Haiti - Social : False rumor ?

Following the numerous rumors conveyed in some Haitian media, suggesting that the Minustah has shot a student Friday, the National Police of Haiti (PNH), the Government and the Minustah give their version of the facts concerning this man, still unidentified.

PNH :

Frantz Lerebour the spokesman of the National Police of Haiti declared "Near the Ministry of Economy and Finance, two individuals ransomed passersby. They fell on someone who shot at them [...] The manshot was accompanied by a sidekick, Lévèque, who was arrested..."

Government :

In its statement, the Ministry of Communication informs that "according to the first information gathered by the National Police, a man in civilian would have fired, Friday, November 16, 2012, on two individuals who tried to rob a passer.

One having been wounded, had fled and the other killed on the spot. Judge Gabriel Ambroise who prepared the minutes, found no identification on the victim, which would not be a student, contrary to rumors.

The authorities continue to conduct extensive research to find the true identity of the deceased.

While deploring this unfortunate incident, the Government appealed for calm and strongly discourages both any acts of vandalism creating insecurity, and every manifestation of violence that can lead to other incidents."

Minustah :

In a note, the Miniustah states "According to information received by the Minustah, a Haitian citizen was shot dead during a gathering of people that took place today [Friday] in the vicinity of the Faculty of Law in Port-au-Prince. The person was taken to hospital and was declared dead later.

Contrary to the initial allegations, we confirm that no member of staff of the Minustah has shot at the person.

The National Police of Haiti (PNH) has launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of this incident. As usual, the Minustah will fully cooperate with the PNH.

The Chief of the Minustah, Mr. Mariano Fernández Amunátequi, is saddened by the loss of life and expresses its sympathies to the family and relatives of the deceased.

The Minustah and the PNH continued their patrols in the area to maintain public order and in order to find the perpetrators of this act."
