Haiti - Economy : Over 1,000 interventions against smuggling and corruption

Thursday, the former Colonel Antoine Atouriste, Director General of the Unit for the Fight against Corruption (ULCC), presented to the press, the results of the operations of the institution for the period 1 July to 30 September 2012.

He indicated that during this period 1005 seizure operations and of control were carried out in the metropolitan area and across the country. These operations have allowed to increase among other, the customs revenue : In July 157 operations in July allowed to recover 3.6 million Gdes. In August, 330 operations for 5.1 million Gdes and 528 operations in September for 9.2 million Gdes, what allowed to recover 17.9 million gourdes that were about to escape the DGI.

During this period, 16 cases of corruption have been brought to justice for legal suites. The Director Atouriste expressed satisfaction with the outcome and promises not to lower the flag to the phenomenon of smuggling and corruption.

"[...] The ULCC has had the privilege of coordinating the activities of the Interdepartmental Committee to fight against smuggling, tax evasion, money laundering and corruption, that the government has put in place [...] to address the shortfall in tax revenuet that it has from March to June [...] we remedy the situation and allowed the state to fill a revenue shortfall of about 30-40% [...] at the port level, it has allowed them to achieve the goal they have aimed for the year [...] by recovering more than one billion gourdes [...]

We have 16 cases that were handed over to the judicial authorities, 15 at the Prosecutor of Port-au-Prince, and one to the Prosecutor of Saint-Marc [...] 16 cases involving 4 ministries and 12 agencies independent of the State, including : the State Electricity of Haiti, the City of Saint-Marc, the City of Les Cayes, CONATEL, the city of Port-au-Prince, SONAPI, ODVA and 4 hospitals of the Republic, Isaie Jeanty maternity, hospital of St. Marc, Petit Goave hospital and also APN, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of National Education, immigration [...]"

Regarding the diversion of 10 million gourdes of Universal Schooling Program Free and Compulsory (PSUGO) in Port-de-Paix, Mr. Atouriste reported that according to his information, 4 million had been recovered and will be returned to the state coffers.
