Haiti - Social : Employment Program for Haitian students in the Dominican Republic

The Consulate General of Haiti in Santiago in the Dominican Republic informs that in accordance with the policy of support advocated by the Government Martelly-Lamothe, it has initiated, through its Social Affairs section, a program allowing to the Haitian students, to get jobs, with the collaboration of a group of entrepreneurs in the Dominican Republic (Santiago, Puerto Plata, Bonao, Moca, La Vega, San Francisco de Macoris, Jarabacoa, Constanza, Samaná, and San Jose de las Matas).

The goal of this program, "My first job" is to give work to 1,000 students of the approximately 6,000 who are currently following, of courses in the 3 main Universities of Santiago (PUCMM, UTESA, ISA).

The entrepreneurs of the zone, welcomed this program with great enthusiasm, recognizing the importance of Haitian labor in the following sectors : construction (apart Haitian workers, more than 700 students studying Civil Engineering and Architecture and Industrial Engineering), Health (over 2,000 students studying medicine) Communication (Call Centers) and Free Zone (assembly).

Currently, 61 students (28%) of the 217 enrolled in the program, working on the local market.

The Consulate think, that with the experience gained in the Dominican Republic, these students will be able to help in the development of Haiti in a not too distant future.
