Haiti - Politic : Laurent Lamothe pleaded for a new partnership with NGOs

Monday on the sidelines of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, has pleaded in a colloquium on the theme "Towards a new partnership between the Government of Haiti and the non-governmental organizations working in Haiti," in favor of a new paradigm with non-governmental organizations working in Haiti.

Laurent Lamothe assured that "the priority is to help Haiti according to the means consistent with the needs of the Haitian people," and expressed the will of the Haitian government to have a law inclusive for NGOs, which defines the rules of engagement.

Held in a context of renewal marked with the seal of the coordination and the effectiveness of aid, this colloquium offered to the Government a new opportunity to recognize the importance of the work of NGOs in the country and also pave the way for a new form of partnership with those working in Haiti, based on principles rooted in mutual confidence and reciprocal obligations. "It is important that the partnership between the NGOs of international solidarity and public authorities of Haiti is strengthened to express the complementarity between the various forms of international cooperation," stressed the Prime Minister.

Rebecca Grynspan, the representative of the United Nations system, put the emphasis on the work already done by the NGOs on the ground, especially after January 12. She recognizes that the Government of Haiti, working towards the development and promises to engage in a dialogue with the authorities on site to help strengthen links with NGOs.

Historically, a large number of NGOs are present in Haiti. The Government reports that 242 foreign and 318 national NGOs are regularly recorded. However, it is estimated to several thousand the number of NGOs operating in Haiti "We need a better coordination. You are all invited to come to Haiti to work with us."

The President Martelly, opened by video conference, this colloquium organized with the support of the United Nations. These assizes were opened by a high-level panel, composed of the Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, representatives of UN and NGO partners, whose U.S. actor Sean Penn who advocated in favor of resettlement of victims of the earthquake of 12 January 2010 and reiterated the need to strengthen the capacity of the Haitian government.
