Haiti - Health : Tour of the First Lady in Hospitals

Sophia Martelly, the First Lady of the Republic, performed, Saturday, July 7, a tour in the arrondissement of Léogâne which led her successively in the municipalities of Grand Goâve, Petit Goâve and in the town of Léogâne.

Accompanied by Mr. Gonzague Day, departmental delegate of the West, the First Lady wanted to assess the conditions in which are provided health care to the people and see the real state of health infrastructure.

The First Lady visited the premises of "Life-Line Christian Mission", an institution founded in 1980 by the Reverend Pastor American, Bob Devoe, where she paid tribute to the responsible who accompany the populations of the city of Grand Goâve and surrounding areas in the fields of health, education, sport and vocational training for over 32 years. The First Lady took the opportunity to renew its commitment to cooperate with those responsible of the Mission to facilitate the socio-economic development of the zone.

During this tour, Mrs. Sophia Martelly had discussions with various doctors in charge of hospitals: George Gauvin of Grand Goâve, Notre Dame of Petit Goâve and St. Croix in Léogâne, on ways and means to facilitate the improvement of health care these centers visited daily by hundreds of patiens. Mrs. Martelly collected the list of grievances of these centers for appropriate action.

In the town of Léogâne, the Hospital Sainte-Croix, un by the Episcopal Church and recognized before January 12, 2010, as the largest hospital center in this region, is now devoid of adequate infrastructure, medicine and sanitary materials, and works with staff shortages.

Welcomed by the staff of this hospital, including a physician of service, the First Lady has be able to found by herself the extent of need. he workforce strengthening, the reopening of some basic services and drug supply are its top priorities.

The First Lady of the Republic, also asked the various responsible of health of the borough of Léogâne to stand together, so that appropriate efforts be undertaken to improve the condition of these hospitals until they can find the necessary funds for the construction of new modern hospitals throughout the country.
