Haiti - Quebec : The Emergency Fund for Haiti of the UMQ invested $50,000 in Labrousse

The Union of Quebec Municipalities (UMQ) has proceeded to the signing of a contribution agreement with "Collaboration Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu/Haiti." The Board of Directors of the UMQ, has approved a funding of $50,000 through its Emergency Fund for Haiti for the establishment of an infrastructure project complementary and integrated to the project of micro hydroelectric plant currently deployed in Labrousse, a small community in the department of Southwest of Haiti.

"[...] This is to permit the production of prototype of fabrication of concrete poles and to train the Haitian staff who will have to manage and operate this small mobile plant of fabrication. These elements are essential to rural electrification of this area and eventually the peripheral areas. The project will promote the development of sustainable local employment in this isolated community in Haiti," declared Eric Forest, President of the UMQ and Mayor of Rimouski.

For Mr. André Gamache, President and founder of "Collaboration-Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu/Haiti" : "The fundamental purpose of its organization, is to support by all available means and on an exclusive basis, the efforts of FODES-5 [Foundation for Economic and Social Development] a Haitian humanitarian organization, which promotes the economic, social and cultural development in its area of intervention [Labrousse]. To realize this project, Collaboration Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu/Haiti and FODES-5

have organized an integrated development plan based on the concept of the Millennium Village advocated by the United Nations to address poverty in developing countries."

This is the eighth project financed by the Emergency Fund for Haiti, funded by voluntary contributions from members of the UMQ, to the tune of 791.857 dollars. The seven other local infrastructure projects have been made in the four municipalities of the region of the Palmes in Haiti, Gressier, Léogane, Grand-Goâve and Petit-Goâve. This fund is an initiative post-earthquake [January 2010], of the Board of Directors of the UMQ to provide its share of contribution to Haitian municipalities and their citizens. It has a mission consisting to allow the rehabilitation of basic infrastructure destroyed or the construction of infrastructure similar necessary and non-existent.
