Haiti - Religion : The Salesians of Don Bosco, 75 years of presence in Haiti

The Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), is organizing a series of closure activities commemorating their 75th anniversary of presence in Haiti, on May 19 and 20, 2012.

Salesian mission focuses on the processes of humanization which aims to provide a complete education for young people: "A school which prepares them for life, a parish that evangelizes, a house that hosts, a playground to meet in friends and live in joy." The objective is to provide an integral education for youth, which should contribute to the development and construction of the society. Faithful to the intentions of St. Jean Bosco, the Salesians are intended to "form good Christians and honest citizens."

As part of closure activities commemorating their 75th anniversary this Saturday, May 19, in Gressier (Léogâne), the Congregation SDB will welcome for a day of religious and cultural activities, over 2,500 young people, beneficiaries of the Salesian, from all the departments where the Congregation is present.

Sunday, May 20, these activities will continue in Petion ville, with political authorities, the other members of the Salesian Family, friends and relatives, who will attend the Mass which will be presided by the Salesian Archbishop, Mgr Louis Kébreau, to the Church of St. Jean Bosco. A cultural evening is planned at the Karibe Convention Center.

These activities aim to promote the participation and social commitment through a quality education, of youth and strengthen the Salesian identity between the various actors in the social and political life, who support the project of life of the Salesians of various ways.

The Salesians of Don Bosco arrived in Haiti, 27 May 1936 and started operations with the opening of the Vocational Training Centre "Ecole Nationale des Arts et Métiers" (ENAM) in Port-au-Prince. Currently, they are present in the North East, North, Artibonite, West and South with a total of 10 communities and 72 religious : priests and laity, in Fort Liberté, Cap-Haitien, Gonaïves, Port au Prince (Drouillard, Cité Soleil, Fleuriot, ENAM, and OPEPB Lakou-Lakay), Petion Ville, Thorland Gressier, and Les Cayes. They welcome more than 32,000 young people of the most disadvantaged sectors of the society, providing a quality education, not only through education and vocational training, but also, through informal education, qualification for the job, the attention to street children and other services.
