Haiti - Environment : New wastewater treatment plant

Since late April 2012, a new wastewater treatment plant is operational in Haiti. With this new station, the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) has reached a new milestone in the development of infrastructure to meet the needs of the population in terms of sanitation.

The work of this station started in the year 2010 in order to meet the needs of the population, especially after January 12, 2010 and the introduction of cholera. The inauguration of this site is scheduled for May 23.

Funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECI), the wastewater treatment plant, will collect and treat the liquid wastes from waste water, coming from IDPs camps, treatment centers and those of cholera treatment centers as well as those from pits sunk of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. It can receive daily 500 cubic meters of excreta.

Covering an area of 2 acres, this station is equipped with 7 basins : 2 anaerobic basins or primary settling tank, 1 optional basin or of secondary settlement, 1 maturation basin, 1 basin of control, 1 basin for receiving solid waste from excreta and a seventh for the reception of oils and other.

For the technical side, the lagoon treatment system has been prioritized. This system, commonly used for waste water, was effective, natural and less expensive than other systems such as : the system of Anaerobic Baffled Reactor and the activated sludge system.
